Gulfoss & Geysir Express from Reykjavik

Visit the best natural phenomena that Iceland has to offer – in just 6 hours you will see hot springs, waterfalls and the country’s best know historical sites.

This express tour is perfect for people with limited time in Iceland as it fits in the country’s best natural phenomena and historical sites into one afternoon.

First stop is Thingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament was first established in 930 AD, making it the oldest known functioning parliament in the world and has recently gained the distinction of being heritage listed by UNESCO. Thingvellir is a site of historical, cultural and geological importance as it marks the spot where the American and European tectonic plates meet, and these continents are gradually drifting apart.

The tour carries onto take you to see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, before viewing Geysir – a hot spring erupting from below the Earth’s crust. This is thought to be the oldest known geyser and one of the best examples of this phenomenon in the world. Eruptions here can throw hot water up to 60 meters into the air but can be infrequent, however nearby is the Strokkur geyser which is a much more reliable source of eruptions, usually propelling hot water into the air every 5 to 10 minutes.

On the way back to Reykjavik you will visit the horticultural ‘green house’ town of Hveragerdi where you will learn how geothermal energy has been harnessed, and drive over a beautiful mountain heath back to the capital.
